Judith-Rose Thomas is a member of the Ben Lomond (Cape Portland) peoples of Tasmania. Born in Launceston, she is now based in Bishopsbourne in the Great Western Tiers region. In 2002 Thomas completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Honours, and in 2004 achieved a Masters of Fine Arts and Design, both at the University of Tasmania. Thomas’s geometric works seek to synthesise representations of the Aboriginal petroglyphs that can be found along the north western and north eastern Tasmanian coasts, and symbolic interpretations of the European structures that frame Aboriginal experience. The artist employs the mediums of gouache, impasto gel and modelling compound to build a highly textured surface for her paintings. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Australia, and has been exhibited at The Thistle Gallery, Art Mob and the Salamanca Arts Centre, all in Tasmania.
