Keith Cottier (1938–) was born in Sydney and graduated from Sydney Technical College in 1960, after working part-time for Fowell Mansfield and Maclurcan, then John Allen and Russell Jack. In 1960 he travelled to Europe on a Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship from the NSW Board of Architects. He worked with Ian Fraser and Associates in London, returned to Sydney in 1964 and again joined Allen and Jack. In 1965 he became their partner in Allen, Jack and Cottier; the firm which later won more RAIA design awards than any other NSW practice. His early designs were characteristic of the 'Sydney School’s interest in Scandinavian architecture but he also has been influenced by Italian Carlo Scarpa’s approach to adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. In 2001 he was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal.
