Lesley Turnbull, painter, was born 1953 in Kaitaia, New Zealand. After working for twelve years as a freelancer in the New Zealand and Australian film and television industry, Turnbull moved to Australia and received citizenship in 1994. In the same year she completed an Associate Diploma of Fine Arts at St George Technical Collage, Sydney, before embarking on a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours), Painting and Drawing, at the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts.
First showing her work with the College of Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition in 1996, Turnbull has since shown in over 30 group exhibitions. Her first solo exhibition, entitled 'Vis a Vis’, was held in 2000 at PCL Exhibitionists Art Gallery, and in 2009 she has exhibited in a group show entitled 'Paint’ at Stella Downer Fine Art in Sydney.
In 2009 Turnbull was selected as a finalist in the 47th Fisher’s Ghost Art Award. Her work has previously been selected for many prizes nationally including the Fleurieu Art Prize, the Hazelhurst Art Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, the Paddington Art Prize and the Waverly Art Prize. Turnbull has thrice won the Waverley Art Prize in Sydney, in three different categories. In 1998, she received the Photographic Prize, followed by the Oil Painting Prize in 1999 and the Works on Paper Prize in 2007.
