sketcher, was born in Echunga, South Australia, third of the five daughters and six children of Walter Duffield, a miller, pastoralist and politician, and Phoebe, née Johnstone. She lived on her parents’ Para Para estate at Gawler, where her father’s vineyard and major steam-mill were located. In 1868 she exhibited The Fisherman’s Good Night
with the South Australian Society of Arts, a pen-and-ink drawing said to show 'remarkable delicacy of touch, and careful elaboration of detail’ despite not winning a prize. On 13 July 1870 Louisa Duffield married Frank Makin at Gawler.
