sketcher, was born at Middle Swan, Western Australia, in April 1834, second daughter of Marshall MacDermott and Harriet, née Birch, a gifted pianist. On 9 April 1846 the MacDermotts left in the Champion for Adelaide where Louisa’s father had been appointed manager of the South Australian branch of the Bank of Australasia, a position he retained until March 1852. He was succeeded by Samuel Tomkinson, whom Louisa married at North Adelaide on 7 September 1853. They had five daughters and seven sons. She died on 5 January 1910.

A charcoal and chalk sketch signed L. Tomkinson which depicts St Peter’s Collegiate School, Adelaide, with the old hospital in the foreground (1856, NLA), is presumably by Louisa. Her father was one of the founders of the school.
