Margaret Rich has been one of the key figures both in researching, collecting and exhibiting colonial and impressionist art, and in regional arts in Victoria. After spending five years as Director of Geelong Art Gallery, she became the longest serving Director of the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

This exhibition at Clune Galleries was the first scholarly survey exhibition of von Guerard’s work. As Clunes was a dealer gallery all the works were for sale, but because of the quality of the exhibition many of the paintings were purchased for public collections, including the (then) Australian National Gallery.
