Holgate studied at the National Gallery School from 1886 – 1892. As a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors she exhibited with the Society between 1907 to 1938. In Sydney, she exhibited at the 1934 exhibition titled “Women Artists in Australia – A Representative Exhibition”. She frequently exhibited at Melbourne's Athenaeum Gallery until her death in 1938.
