Marion St Clair Layman was born in 1869. She was a woodcarver who assisted Gordon Holdsworth carving the church pulpit in Bridgetown, Western Australia. She was also a fine needlewoman. Layman's work was exhibited at the '1907 Exhibition of Women's Work' in Melbourne, Victoria. She is reputed to have won prizes at Melbourne, Coolgardie and Fremantle.
