Martyn Chapman (1933–) graduated from Sydney Technical College in 1957. While a student, he worked at Brewster & Murray, then joined Harold Smith and became a partner with George Rae on graduation. After completing various houses, the Western Stores, Tweed Heads (1960) and winning a commission for the Myer department store in Tamworth, he went on a shopping centre study tour to the United States and Britain during the early 1960s – and began an M.Arch at UNSW, writing his thesis on department store lighting. After 1965, he practised as Martyn D. Chapman. After a short period teaching, he joined the Institute of Arbitrators Australia and became an arbitrator for the NSW Board of Architects. He was president NSW RAIA from 1980 to 1982. His main achievement during that phase was setting up Archicentre.
