Painter, teacher and musician who was born in Geraldton in 1924. He was eighteen when World War II broke out and he served in the Royal Australian Air Force signals 1942-1946. Upon returning to Australia he studied art at Perth Technical College in 1946 and the National Art School in Sydney in 1947-1950, after which he travelled overseas studying in England 1950-1952. He returned to Western Australia and attended Claremont Teachers College for 1953-4. After graduation he taught art in Bunbury.
He exhibited Quartette in the Perth Prize for Contemporary Art at Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1956 and an oil painting, Deep Sea fish, in the Festival of Perth exhibition the same year. In 1958 he moved to England to teach and then tried Canada in 1959 where he took honours at Ontario College of Art. He became the associate curator education at the London Ontario Public Library then the National Gallery and worked at the University of Western Ontario London until 1989.
Maurice Stubbs won the Perth Prize for Contemporary Art in 1959. He was a member of the Perth Group. He won the Western Ontario Purchase Award in 1965 and became a Canadian citizen in 1967. In 1990 he was awarded the City of London Ontario Mayor’s Honours. He also plays classical guitar.
