Merrick Fry, sculptor and painter, was born at Bathurst. Fry studied sculpture at the National Art School, Sydney, from 1971 to 1973.
Fry’s sculptures are based on the language of imagination and magical realism. Fry reconfigures recycled glass objects into ornate baroque lamp forms, aiming to re-imbue discarded materials with functionality and elegance.
In 2010 The University of Newcastle held a survey of Fry’s work at the University Gallery. In 2003 his work was featured in 'Sculpture by the Sea’, Bondi. He was the winner of the Jackson Smith Sculpture Prize 2001 and both the Mirror-Waratah Painting Prize and the National Art School Drawing Prize in 1972. He received the Visual Arts Board Grant to undertake a New York studio residency in 1985.
Fry has shown in over twenty solo exhibitions. His work is represented in numerous collections, including Artbank, Bathurst Regional Gallery, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, Macquarie University, University of New South Wales, University of Western Sydney, Wollongong City Art Gallery, Westmead Children’s Hospital and private collections in Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
