sketcher, has had a pencil view, Port Denison, Looking West (Mitchell Library) attributed to him. It is inscribed: 'Drawn by Michael Miles. Union Jack erected on taking possession of land on which Bowen [North Queensland] has been built; of the expedition started by the government 1861 in search of new country there and survivors Michael Miles was one.’ This ambiguous note appears to have confused two of William Landsborough’s expeditions. Although commissioned by the Victorian and Queensland governments to search for Burke and Wills in 1861 Landsborough’s party was actually at Bowen in 1859 looking for Ludwig Leichhardt (and scouting for suitable pastoral country). Miles obviously sketched his view on the earlier expedition.
