china painter, Sydney. Miss Cohen of Potts Point is referred to regarding “a branch of art, which appears to afford an extensive field of usefulness to many members of the fair sex in the colonies”. In 1879-80 “a couple of daintily painted porcelain plates” by her were exhibited in the British ceramic ware section of the Western Transept of the Sydney International Exhibition ( Sydney Morning Herald 15 March 1880, 7). In reference to the art of painting on porcelain, “Indeed a step in this direction has already been made, for on one of the stands devoted to British ceramic ware, in the Western Transept, are to be seen a couple of daintily painted porcelain plates, the production of Miss Cohen, at Pott Point” ( Sydney Mail 20 March 1880, p.550).
There is some speculation that Miss Cohen is in fact the young Theo Cowan whose family changed the surname.
