Morris Freedman, who passed away in 1976, was born in Russia but grew up in Golders Green, London. His father was a fashion designer. Morris won a scholarship at age 14 to attend an arts school but his father would not allow him to go. He had to stay in business with his father who was in the schmatte business. They had a small business making dresses, coats and suits.
Morris enlisted in the British Army based in the Sinai as a radio operator, then in the early 1950s immigrated to Cape Town. Morris worked as a fashion designer in South Africa for various fashion houses, designing tailored ladies coats and suits and when the family immigrated to Australia in 1961, continued as a designer in Sydney. When he retired he started Ezy-Cut, a system for country women to make their own clothes with a series of different patterns that you could mix and match.
