Mr. Beilby showed seven paintings at the 1847 Exhibition of Colonial Artists in Adelaide. The works, which included landscape and figurative works, received mixed reviews.

The South Australian Advertiser noted that 'two or three paintings by a Mr. Beilby are second to none in the room. We allude particularly to no. 20, Ruins (a study) , the coloring of which is uncommonly well executed’. On the other hand, the South Australian Register considered Beilby’s works 'rough in style’.
