sketcher, cartoonist and school-teacher, worked in Hobart in the 1880s. On 23 February 1884, the Mercury reported:

One exhibit in Mr A.P. Miller’s window, Murray-street, yesterday attracted the notice of many passers-by. It consisted of two pencil sketches, a little larger than cabinet size, the work, we understand, of Mr Birchell, drawing master at the High School. The first is a portrait of Professor Erdmann, of the Hobart Gymnasium, and an admirable likeness; the other is a clever cartoon, representing the professors among the weights and dumb-bells, and holding aloft in his right-hand the most weighty personage to be found in the colonies [Jennings], who need not here be more particularly described. As may be imagined, the muscle developed by the professor is as extraordinary in its proportions as the effort itself.
