portrait painter, was listed as Mr E. Southern, a resident practising artist of 217 Swanston Street, Melbourne in the catalogue of the 1853 Victorian Fine Arts Society Exhibition where he showed a portrait of the Hon. W. a’Beckett. Also exhibited was a portrait of Mr Davidson by 'C. Southern’, presumably a misprint. (The subject was probably the husband of the miniaturist Letitia Davidson who showed work in the same exhibition.) E. Southern taught 'artistic drawing’ in classes held at the Launceston Mechanics Institute after it opened in 1860, while 'E. Sothern’ [sic] was listed as a teacher of drawing and painting at Launceston in Walch’s Literary Intelligencer for March, April and May 1860, although not afterwards.
