painter(?) and lithographer, is presumed to be the Mr Kempe who arrived at Hobart Town with his wife and three children in the Ellen on 8 April 1836. By August 1837 he was recorded as living on 'Tapps old farm’ in the Ross area of Tasmania. Two undated lithographs signed N.I. Kempe are known: Mount Morriston, the Residence of George Scott, Esq., Van Diemen’s Land and Mona Vale, the Residence of William Kermode, Esq. Van Diemen’s Land . Copies in the Mitchell Library are inscribed from the artist to Miss Horne of Chiswick, Ross. An oil painting of Mona Vale (Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library of Tasmania. Hobart) is apparently the original from which the lithograph was taken, so it too may be by Kempe.
