weaver, singer and historian, was a Yaraldi woman of the River Murray, Point McLeay (Raaukan), South Australia. Her Aboriginal name was Katipelvild, and she was the daughter of Louisa Karpeny of the Yaraldi Wutaltinjeri clan (who died on 18 May 1921 at the age of 100), and of Yakapeni of the Yaraldi Piltindjeri clan. At the age of sixteen, she was given in marriage to John Mack (Aboriginal name Telwara) who came from Kalkain (Gulnare) on the upper River Murray. She was eighty-five years old when Ronald and Catherine Berndt worked with her, and had always taken an interest in her own culture, particularly in relation to songs and ceremonies.
Ron and Catherine Berndt fondly recalled Pinkie Mack as a most likeable, affectionate and energetic person, a skilled and knowledgeable singer and a memorable collaborator in their work of recording the old ways of the Yaraldi. A World That Was is a fitting tribute both to her and to Albert Karloan, the Berndts’ other major artist-collaborator.
