Nikki McCarthy is a descendent of the Dabee Tribe of the Wiradjuri Nation who was based in Narrabeen in 2007. McCarthy completed a Bachelor of Art at the College of Fine Art, UNSW in 1993, and in 2002 completed a Master of Fine Arts at the same institution. McCarthy’s work explores the complexity of Indigenous identity as it is reflected in the intersections of contemporary and historical environments, resources, experiences and beliefs. She exploits a range of material for this purpose, including feathers, ochres, beeswax, wood, shells, fishing line and net, sculptural materials such as bronze, slumped glass and Perspex, scientific mediums and instruments and new media technologies. McCarthy has participated in a number of group exhibitions across Australia, and has contributed to a range of public art commissions in NSW. Solo exhibitions include 'Critical Influence’ at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney in 1998, and 'The Dreamcatcher’ at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, 2005.
