Born “in the bush” near the Stansmore Range c. 1940, Njamme is another leading woman in the Balgo community with a large extended family, many of whom are also practising artists, including her husband Jimmy Njamme. A Kukatja speaker, her country lies near Mangkai in the Stansmore Range, and her principal stories are Tingari and Water Dreamings. She began painting for Warlayirti Artists in 1988, and often works with one or two of her daughters – thus her work can exhibit several different styles. The artists’ great knowledge of her country and its associated mythology is, however, always evident in her paintings.
