CHECK apparently mainly written as email by Roger Collins [University of Otago, Dunedin, NZ]
NZ-born expatriate painter who visited a string of Australian ports as he travelled to and from England, and even exhibited works with Australian titles. He crossed paths with Hayley Lever at Saint Ives in 1910, and later they were exhibited in some of the same New York galleries…. the part of Merton’s life I’ve got to this week involves him rubbing shoulders with some Australian women artists in Paris from September 1910 on. They were all working at Colarossi’s at the time, but two he does not name in his letters, so chances of identifying them are close to zilch. The third however is named, although I have problems deciphering her name or something close to that? She was married to a violinist, they had a big apartement close to the river, they were clearly settled in Paris for an extended stay (she even had spare furniture to lend Merton) and they had a baby! She was also a large person – he starts by calling her 'the big Australian’.
