Ponsonby May Carew-Smyth was born at Cork, Ireland. He studied at the Belfast School of Art and Design, and later taught at the national Art Training School, London and Rugby School. He arrived in Australia in January 1891, and was appointed Principal of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery School (Ballarat West Technical Art School) from 1891 to 1899.
In 1907 Carew-Smyth was appointed Chief Inspector of Art for the Victorian Education department. He designed commemorative wall plaques for state schools after World War One.
In 1936 Carew Smyth was Acting Director of the National Gallery of Victoria.
