Paul Schremmer, (b.1929) A.S.T.C., A.M.I.E. (Aust.), A.I.D.I.A.
In 1951 Schremmer completed an engineering diploma and cadetship and began working at Email in product development. He then started a certificate in design and colour at East Sydney Technical College. From 1954-56 Schremmer worked in the UK, Canada and the US, first as an automobile stylist for Ford in the UK, then as a technical illustrator with Avro Aircraft, Canada, and then with Westinghouse USA (Email) in industrial design, where he designed white goods. In 1956 Schremmer returned to Australia to set up the Email Industrial Design department with a staff of six. Over the next ten years the department grew to include product planning and design.
Schremmer travelled to the US with Westinghouse and also represented Australia at the ICSID Congress in 1963. In 1965, he served as President of the Society of Industrial Designers of Australia (SIDA). He established his own firm Paul Schremmer and Associates in 1967. In the 1960s Schremmer gave a series of lectures to manufacturers around Australia about design for mass production. These lectures created considerable interest in both trade journals and newspapers of the time.
After 1989, Schremmer’s firm continued as Schremmer Crick, and developed products for many Australian and international companies. Firms which have employed Schremmer’s designs include Ford Motor Company (1954-1955), Crown Corning, Primus, Crane, Metters, Kelvinator, Rheem and many others.
