Born at Willowra during World War II, Peggy Nampijinpa has lived all her life in the Willowra community and is closely related to several other artists there, including her younger sister, Lucy Nampijinpa. Her tribe is Warlpiri and her heritage country lies around Mt Barkly. She paints her uncle’s Budgerigar Dreaming and the same Damper Seed and Sugarbag Dreamings as her sister. She began painting on canvas in the late ’80s at the same time as Lucy and most of the others now painting at Willowra, but she learnt to paint originally for ceremonial purposes, body paintings and dancing boards (nulla nullas).
