Rex Winston of the Gamilaraay language group of North West NSW, was born in 1968 and raised by a non-Aboriginal farming family in the Central West of NSW. It was during his childhood that Winston, as stated in the 2007 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize catalogue, “became interested in natural forms such as raindrops, clouds and sunsets”.

Winston works with acrylics on canvas and was a finalist in the 2005 and 2007 Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize held each year at NSW Parliament House, Sydney.
