Richard (Dick) Apperley (1925 or 1924?-1992) graduated from the University of Sydney and was registered in 1951. He taught design and architectural history for many years at the University of NSW, became Chairman of its Faculty of Architecture and wrote several significant books. They include A Pictorial Guide to Identifying Australian Architecture : styles and forms from 1788 to the present (1989, with Robert Irving and Peter Reynolds, North Ryde: Angus & Robertson); 444 Sydney buildings (1971, with Peter Lind, Sydney: Angus & Robertson) and a chapter in Robert Irving’s The History and Design of the Australian House.
