Engineer, architect and surveyor who exhibited a watercolour rendering of the “Soldiers Memorial Arch” with the West Australian Society of Arts exhibition in 1920. Downes was born in Mauritius, the son of General Downes. He was educated in England and emigrated to South Australia with his father in 1877. Downes was indentured to a hydraulic engineer and after completion moved to Victoria.
He came to Western Australia in 1895 to join the Public Works before branching out on his own account in 1905. Downes built numerous country branches for the National Bank and the Bank of Australasia. He was married to Mabel Poynter of Melbourne in 1896.
