Thomson trained in law in Brisbane but moved to Melbourne in the 1970s where he worked with Myer, then Reg Riddell at Riddell Interiors, later becoming a Director in the firm of Riddell Marly. He had a interior design studio Robert Thomson Interiors in Balwyn, a Melbourne suburb. Now retired from Riddell Marly Interior Design, he is involved in the Johnston Collection, Melbourne.
