Roderick Yunkaporta was born in Aurukun, North Queensland and learnt the traditional carving techniques from watching his elders carve ceremonial object. He began carving himself in the 1990s and has exhibited his milkwood carved animals in Europe and North America. He was a participating artist in the exhibitions, 'Old Way – New Way’, 'Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest’ at the Queensland Art Gallery in 2003 and 'Gatherings II’ in Brisbane. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Queensland Art Gallery.
