Beckett began a career in the arts as a film-maker and director for the Shell Film Unit, later producing films for Cinesound, the Commonwealth Film Unit and other outlets. In 1974, he began working for working for the Commonwealth in the Prime Minister's Department and continued in government arts policy engaging with the national collection, the Australian Film and Sound Archive and other arts agencies until retirement.
