Children’s comic book artist, drew stories for younger children. The Young Knight: A Story of the Third Crusade published in Capers Comics (c.1948) is described in Shiell as:

“…a historical adventure featuring a young boy, Cedric, who leaves home to fight in the Crusades. The female characters in the story, Cedric’s mother and his friend Margaret Fitz Maurice, are passive beings who wait patiently at home while Cedric and his comrades, who are brave, patriotic heroes, experience life-threatening adventures. For example, in the excitement of battle the soldiers’ cries are heard:

'If we die we do so knowing we have saved the army

'We’ll give them a taste of English steel.’ “

Stokes also did Fun at Cockatoo Island and Pogl and Namja and the Dragon Goanna , two comics in the Pacific Pictorial series of at least 8 comics (c.1947-48). Pacific Pictorial was a companion to Capers , both being published by Lush Studios. Stokes, A. Lush and Des Conrades – who also did 2 comics – were the artists involved throughout.
