cartoonist, architect, urban designer and city planner, works in Adelaide. He has a B.Arch. from Adelaide University and a Master of Architecture from Pennsylvania. He won a four-year Fulbright Scholarship to the US, where he had cartoons regularly published in the New Yorker , the New York Times and the Saturday Evening Post as well as the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Bulletin . In England, his work appeared in the London Times and Daily Telegraph . He contributed cartoons to Sydney’s Nation Review in the 1970s (e.g. Remembrance Day 1975, ill. King, 230) until enticed to the Bulletin c.1977. In Australia his work has also appeared in the Australian , the Herald Sun and the Courier Mail . (It’s likely Bateup also drew occasional cartoons about architecture for Architecture Australia c.1980s.)
In c.2000-1 Bateup was the Adelaide Advertiser 's political cartoonist, alternating with Atchison while continuing his architectural practice. Original cartoons drawn for the Advertiser have been regularly included in the NMA’s annual Bringing the House Down exhibition, e.g. Hollingworth GG gag in 2001 (NMA website).
