Scott Wells is an Indigenous artist based in Wynyard, on the northwest coast of Tasmania. Wells began painting in 2000, and seeks to affirm the Indigenous presence in Tasmania and combat stereotypical views of Aboriginality. He creates tactile paintings which sometimes have symbolic content, and sometimes depict people and places in a realistic mode. Often, Wells integrates found materials into the works, and sometimes he collaborates with his children to produce the paintings. In 2008, Well’s painting Bush to the Sea was one of twelve artworks by Tasmanian Aboriginal artists that were published as a set of greeting cards as part of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Artists Project.
