“Cartoonist, printmaker and illustrator, worked on metropolitan dailies and other national publications as a freelance artist. He published children’s magazines, specialised in medical illustrations, was a pioneer film animator, and author and art teacher at Manly Evening College, Sydney” (Rafty, 1964). Along with 7 other artists, Frank Beck, George Finey , Clive Guthrie (husband of Bessie Guthrie), John Harvey, Geoff Litchfield, McDonnell & Adrienne ('Kitty’) Parkes , he contributed to a folio of large prints done for the Communist Party, Saga: A protest in linocuts by the Worker Artists , Workers Art Club, 1933 [or c.1932-35] (ML F7741/W, ill. Coleman & Tanner, 106). In 1934 he was associated with Syd Nicholls in publishing Fatty Finn’s Weekly , thought to be Australia’s first locally produced comic book.
In 1943 'Clem’ drew cartoons for the communist Tribune . In the mid-1940s he drew cartoons for the Common Cause (the Federated Miners’ newspaper). Those signed with his initials ('S.C.’) include Treat Them With Contempt! 13 May 1944, 1, Improve Conditions in the Mines! 3 June 1944, 1, Record Fatalities 27 January 1945, 1, It Is Still The Main Objective 31 March 1945, 1. Others were signed 'Clements’, e.g. New Vehicle Needed Mr. Commissioner 16 March 1946, 1.
