Sue Charles, Wemba Wemba artist, was born in Swan Hill, Victoria. Her artistic practice encompasses basket weaving, emu egg carving and jewellery. In 2007 Charles was awarded the Victorian Cultural Heritage Award at the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards for Untitled (2007), a pair of baskets made from hayband – a form of plastic rope. As she writes in the award catalogue

'My art was inspired by Aunty Dot Peters , a renowned Elder and weaver, who used to take me to collect flax and grasses for weaving eel traps. I like to weave baskets with hayband and seagrass.’ (p.15)

Charles is committed to ensuring that the basket weaving traditions that she has inherited are conveyed to younger generations of her family and community.
