“A Rising Young Artist – We recently had opportunity of making favourable mention of the undoubted talent shown by Mr T. F. Bartlett, of Park-street, in producing pencil sketches from nature; all the more clever and striking because he is a self-taught artist. We have now been shown another series of his sketches in Indian ink, depicting the growth of gum trees taken from various parts of the Domain. The correctness of drawing, and the absolute fidelity to nature in the reproduction of the gaunt and weird-like forms eucalyptic forestry assumes, is marvellous as coming from an almost untrained hand, and produced in the intervals of daily labour” ( Mercury 9 November 1888, 2).
