Tatipai Barsa was born in the Torres Strait Islands in 1967 and lives on Murray Island. Barsa’s works of synthetic polymer paint on paper and lino-cuts talk of the natural environment of his homeland with images of shifting sands, sea grasses and marine life. Barsa was represented in the 2001 “Gatherings, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art From Queensland Australia” exhibition held in Brisbane. In the accompanying catalogue Barsa states: “Most of my artwork reflects the beautiful colours that surround my island, the colours of the Coral Sea and the flowers. Many of my family still practise weaving and carving, which encourages me to produce those traditional patterns in my work.”
