painter, produced a life-size posthumous portrait of the bushranger Ben Hall at the police barracks, Forbes, New South Wales, immediately after Hall had been shot dead by the police on 5 May 1865. Durnford was described as a 'local artist’ and the painting was said to show several of the fatal gunshot wounds. Durnford acquired several testimonials attesting to the faithfulness of his likeness, including one from Mr W. Farrand, MP for Forbes, and another from Ann Elizabeth Hall, the bushranger’s sister-in-law.
