sketcher, was identified in 1927 as the artist 'T.S.H.’ although since then his surname on two precise and architecturally-detailed pencil and wash views of Sydney dated 1839 (Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney) has been misread as 'Hatfull’. The drawings depict the Catholic Church, Hyde Park, Sydney and The Court House & St. James’ Church Hyde Park Sidney [sic] . Other sketches catalogued in 1927 included Sidney Harbour from the Cove , The Town and Cove of Sydney (c.1839, showing Government House with builders’ scaffolds around it) and two pencil sketches of Aborigines titled Two Natives Wearing Opossum Cloaks and Native Mode of Ascending Trees .
Thomas Hatfield visited Sydney in 1838-39 and is listed among the Sydney subscribers to E.H. Baily’s statue of Sir Richard Bourke. Evidently a short-term visitor to Sydney, he may have been a crew-member on one of the Royal Navy’s survey ships since another undated sketch by 'T.S.H.’ is a view of Victoria, Port Essington, New Holland , the north Australian (now Northern Territory) settlement under Captain John Macarthur .
