Tom Sanders worked in many mediums, as a ceramicist, designer and painter.
In Ceramics he moved between functional ceramics, decorative ware and production pottery. In later years he focused more on using clay and and it’s surfaces for artistic expression.

Tom was a thrower and decorator for a production pottery; established a studio; collaborated with painters; designed and produced architectural ceramic murals and trained his son Chris Sanders.

When Tom returned from serving in the Royal Australian Air Force as an Aircraftman 1, he trained in sculpture and pottery. He did some decorating for Guy Boyd while they were students and later for David and Hermia Boyd.
Almost 20 years later, Tom collaborated with painters Jan Senbergs, John Olsen and Fred Williams on a series of decorative plates.

In 1949 Tom sold ceramic wares through Georges Department Store under the name 'Dorian Sands’ and in 1954 he established a ceramics studio with his wife Elizabeth in Eltham.
