cartoonist, drew a cartoon for the Bulletin dated 27 December 1919, which showed a clergyman angrily waving his umbrella at lots of aeroplanes in the sky over his church (original Mitchell Library [ML] Px*D514/47). Captioned Sunday Flying. The Wowser: “Oh, my collection!” it was based on a newspaper clipping from the Melbourne Argus of 22 December 1919 about a Wesleyan clergyman protesting about the commercialisation of the Sabbath in joy trips by profiteering 'air-hogs’. Editorial work at the Bulletin altered the title to the simpler More Oppositions! before it was published on 12 September 1928, almost nine years after it had been drawn and sent by Sheild from 38 Skene St., Newtown, Geelong. 'Tom Shield’ is included in a c.1930s list of Bulletin Artists (ML Px*D557 pt 5, '22’). He also wrote a pamphlet, How to be a Cartoonist (ML), and Craig Judd says he did several cartoons about aircraft.
