Verna Lawrie, who was born at the Koonibba Aboriginal Mission (35 kilometres west of Ceduna, South Australia), is a Kokatha/Mirning painter and potter who works out of the Ceduna Aboriginal Arts & Cultural Centre. Her work is informed by the Dreaming stories of her people. She exhibited her work in the Adelaide Festival Centre’s annual 'Our Mob’ exhibition in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Lawrie has also exhibited at the Red Poles Gallery in McLaren Vale (2007); at Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute in Adelaide; at True Blue Gallery in Fremantle, Western Australia; and in a group show Port Augusta. In 2008 she won the Major Art Prize in the Port Lincoln Art Prize competition.
Lawrie enjoys passing on the Dreamtime stories to her children and grandchildren.
