sketcher and soldier, a lieutenant in the 51st Regiment, arrived at Western Australia on board the Runnymede on 25 June 1840. The five etched plates of bush life in the lawyer and settler E.W. Landor’s The Bushman; or, Life in a New Country (London 1847) are all stated to be after sketches by Irby. In July 1847 Irby sought his discharge from the Army and subsequently joined T.W. Hazelwood’s pastoral venture at Bindoon. This was not a success and, having become heavily indebted to Hazelwood, Irby left the colony in May 1850 to rejoin his regiment.
