Born in Quairanding in the Midlands region of Western Australia, Albert (Bertie) Hayward was raised on the Aboriginal Reserve in Katanning. Hayward left the reserve when he was 25 years old.

Hayward studied art at the Thornlie and Midland campuses of Swan College of TAFE. It was during this course that he developed his interest in abstract painting. After leaving TAFE he enrolled in an Aboriginal Art course at Curtin University.

He is influenced by Western Australian Aboriginal landscape artists Revel Cooper, Bella Kelly and Greg Kelly and is inspired by nature and the environment.

Hayward is associated with Mungart Boodja Art Centre, Katanning. He lives and works in Perth.
