lithographer, was born in Nottingham, England, and apprenticed to the printing firm of Underwood in Birmingham. He worked in Birmingham for Vincent Brooks, Risden & Culliford before migrating to Victoria in 1856 where, Woodhouse states, he engaged in a 'variety of occupations altogether foreign to lithography’ until joining Charles Troedel 's firm. He was with Troedel for six and a half years then spent a year at Sands & McDougall’s printing office, the firm which produced the Melbourne Directory . Most of Tennant’s known commissions were brewers’ show cards and whisky labels, but he did lithograph all the plates in the three series of Dangerous Snakes of Victoria for Professor McCoy.

In 1877 Tennant was engaged as lithographer to the South Australian Advertiser and moved to Adelaide for six and a half years, including two years spent with J.H. Sherring. Then he returned to Melbourne and re-entered the printery of Troedel & Co. during the Victorian land boom. Finally, he worked for the lithographic department of the Victorian Railways until he retired.
