sketcher, was only seven and a half years old in 1862 when his father exhibited his pencil view of the sea in the sixth annual exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts, Adelaide. It won a prize and the Advertiser noted that this 'promises well for the little boy’s future career’. At the next exhibition he won the prize for the best drawing by a person under twelve. Further evidence of his youthful talent was shown at the society’s 1864 exhibition when Labatt ('who is becoming a regular contributor to the Society of Arts’) was awarded a prize of one guinea for a sepia drawing, again judged the best work by a young person under twelve. No further exhibits, however, are known.
