Bates exhibited several paintings in the NSW Court of the 1888-89 Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition. Given their subject matter - various landscapes of Wentworth Falls and Mount Piddington it is likely that Bates spent some time in the Blue Mountains, if not residing there permanently.

Bates’ shown in Class 1 Oil Paintings: On the Blue Mountains and Wentworth Falls etc cat. no. 1, while 'W. Aldenhiven [sic]’ of 74 Hunter Street, Sydney, showed the oil painting Mount Piddington by 'G. Bates’ (no.1406) in the NSW Court’s Art Loan Collection.
