painter, exhibited watercolour flower paintings at the 1880-81 Melbourne International Exhibition and received a first order or merit for them. Miss Purves (called 'Catherine’ not 'Caroline’ by the jury) and Ellis Rowan (another flower painter) received the only gold medals awarded to any artists from Victoria, although one was belatedly awarded to Louis Buvelot after an official protest from Melbourne’s male art professionals. Miss Caroline Frances Purves, c/- 'Gilt. (Gilbert) Purves, Exchange, Melbourne’ exhibited: Design for a fan – 'Roses and Dragon Fly’, on satin; 'Rhododendrons’; 'Flame Flowers, and others’; and 'White Carnations’.
