sketcher, was born in Adelaide on 28 February 1850, the twenty-first and youngest child of William Giles, colonial manager of the South Australian Company, and the tenth surviving child of his second wife, Emily Elizabeth, née McGeorge. In 1869 Caroline won a 2-guinea prize for her 'original rough pencil landscape’ shown with the South Australian Society of Arts. She married Charles Edward Stokes in Adelaide on 12 June 1877 and is said to have accompanied him to Western Australia some time later.
